best "organic" mattress is 100% natural latex. We bought a king size 3" thick and put it on our euro style spring board frame. The best price I found is at foamorder.com

How special to have a family made crib!! Sadly, after all the research and pain and agonizing I did on crib mattresses, I have none. No advice, nothing! LOL. I remember it was very daunting. I think Japan or Sweden might have some options from what I remember.
We had a beautiful crib and never used it. We've coslept from day 1(though I did try to use the crib for the few hours he would go down before I was ready to sleep). In fact, he climbed and fell out at 10 months so I got rid of the crib.…

In fact, he climbed and fell out at 10 months so I got rid of the crib. Sigh... he's been on a mattress on the floor of his room since around his first birthday. It is fabulous for him! I know many people who have been able to use or transition to the crib when baby is older. We co-slept as it allowed us to get more sleep with a new baby. :-) Baby slept in the crib for a nap once, for about 30 minutes, lol. We purchased a twin mattress to place next to our king size bed and pushed them both against the wall. That allowed room for diaper stuff, etc. Much easier than having to leave the bed in the middle of the night every hour to nurse. Baby just latched on and we both were able to doze back off to sleep.
Do NOT borrow a used crib mattress, as there is an issue with sids and old crib mattresses. New mattress have issues with antimony due to the fire-retardants, I believe. Organic child/crib mattresses still must have some fire-retardant chemicals, though, perhaps??
