Hey everyone,
There is a woman on CharlotteMommies, Carolyn Davis, who has been organizing
Group Orders from Local Farms (GO Local). She's done pork, beef and eggs. It's
a great way to get people organized to buy whole animals and avoid retail a la
carte prices for local/pastured/grass fed meat.
Anyone can order, you don't have to be on CharlotteMommies.
Deposits are required to secure your place in the order and she arranges pick up
at her house in Concord. (This is especially advantageous for Creekside Farm
since it is north of Mt. Pleasant and the meat processor they use is in
Gibbonsville VERY FAR away from Charlotte!) Creekside does not have a webpage,
but they are on facebook.

Email Carolyn cxdavis@hotmail.com for more detailed info.

I've not bought 100% grassfed before. Anyone know how the price of $3.40/lb
hanging weight compares to other places that sell cow shares?
I've bought a share of Harkey's beef and have been very pleased with it.

Here is the general info:----------------------------------

"Many of you have group ordered local beef from Harkey Farms and we will be
continuing that as well as adding Creekside Farm Beef to the offering. Please
note: You are purchasing from these farms; I am simply facilitating the group
order.

Here are the two options:

Harkey Farms
Harkey Farms is run by a multigenerational farm family just north of Mt.
Pleasant, NC. Unlike conventional commercial beef farms, their animals are
raised in the pasture and are mostly grass fed. They receive no antibiotics or
growth hormones. Their beef do receive some locally grown grain as a supplement
and to finish them. Although not 100% grass fed, the animals provide a quality
product at an excellent price.

Price: $1.90/lb. of hanging weight (this includes the beef, Cruse Meat
Processing and handling fees)
To give you an idea of price -- Total Price of ¼ Beef (based on 700 lb. hanging
weight*) is: $332.50; 1/8 = $166.25

Creekside Farms
Creekside Farms is a small family operated farm located just north of Mt.
Pleasant, NC. The farm was started by the VonCannon's for the simple reason to
provide much of their own food and raise their child(ren) around a farming
environment. They offer naturally raised 100% grass fed beef which are
antibiotic & hormone free. The result is a leaner meat which provides their
customers with a superior product both in taste and nutrition. Due to the length
of time to raise a 100% grass-fed beef to maturity, there is additional expense
involved.

Price: $3.40/lb of hanging weight (this includes the beef, Matkins Meat
Processing and handling fees)
To give you an idea of price -- Total Price of ¼ Beef (based on 600 lb. hanging
weight*) is: $510.00; 1/8 = $255.00

By purchasing from a local farmer -- there is true accountability in our system.
You know who is raising your food. You know who to talk with if you have
questions and you know that the farmer is eating the same food that he is
selling to you.

HOW CAN I GET IN ON THE GROUP ORDER:
We will take deposits for the group orders until May 14, 2010. A deposit will
secure your order – please email me at cxdavis@hotmail.com to get the detailed
information sheet on how the process will work and include your site & screen
name with your request (ie., CM - davismom).

*The exact total for your beef purchase will be determined based on the hanging
weight of the animal for which you are a part.

Nationwide rally and protest against GMO's and Monsantotag:xploringholisticalternatives.ning.com,2010-04-13:2327957:Topic:175212010-04-13T12:30:54.133ZTori Groathttps://xploringholisticalternatives.ning.com/profile/ToriGroat25

Q: Are the cows given any organic grains? Or only grasses/hay, with no
herbicides/pesticide exposure for years?
A: Our cows receive ONLY grasses, forages and stored grasses and forages. This is the USDA definition of grass-fed beef. We do not believe in overuse of herbicides. 1) It is not necessary and 2) it is expensive. We use the absolute least amount possible.

Q: I assume no antibiotics or growth hormones?
A: The animals destined for our retail program do not receive antibiotics or growth hormones. If an animal becomes injured or sick, it is treated accordingly. If treatment involves antibiotics, it is removed from our retail program and sold through the livestock market or privately on the farm. We do not use growth hormones at all.

Q: And if grass-fed, are the cows 100% grass fed, year round?
A: As I mentioned in the first response, they are 100% grass-fed. When the weather does not permit them to be on fresh grass, we have stored hay from our own fields, or bring in purchased hay from a reputable seller.

Q: Can one purchase portions of a cow?
A: We want our customers to be happy with our beef. We encourage new customers to purchase small packages of our beef as a "sample" before committing to large orders. However, customers who are familiar with grass-fed beef may be comfortable with purchasing a 1/4 beef (approximately 120 pounds) for $5.00 per pound. We offer a whole beef (approximately 450 pounds) for $4.85/pound.

Q: What is the approximate percentage of fat in the ground beef?
A: We ask our processor for an 80/20 mix on our ground beef. Since the beef itself is so lean, we don't want to go any leaner with the mix.

Q: What is the price per pound? Is there a charge for the processing, or is that included?
A: We offer retail cuts on the farm. Our prices are listed on our website. The large quantity orders are mentioned above. These prices include all processing. The meat is vacuumed-packed and frozen, freezer-ready. We do have to charge a 2% state sales tax.

Q: Are the strawberries organic, non-pesticide, or greenhouse raised? We are all desperately seeking an organic U-pick strawberry resource for our families.
A: Our strawberries are not organic. As I mentioned above, we only use pesticides when absolutely necessary. We follow all procedures for field entry and harvest, and often add extra time to the stated procedures.

Our website address is www.DoubleRCattleServices.com . Feel free to look around and ask questions. I appreciate the questions you already asked. We encourage people to ask questions of their supplier and be sure that everyone has the same understanding of the production practices.

Thanks again,
Beverly Roberts
Advice on declining the PKU screentag:xploringholisticalternatives.ning.com,2010-02-15:2327957:Topic:165322010-02-15T21:35:27.460ZMeredethhttps://xploringholisticalternatives.ning.com/profile/Meredeth

No one goes in the house and our pick ups are usually very quick.

Another opportunity that people may be interested in is as a helper/volunteer.
