Exploring Holistic Alternatives

Families practicing: Alternative & Natural Health; Attachment and Mindful Parent

Cross fingers, next Thursday we 're signing the contract for our new house... we’re moving to Kelly Greens subdivision, Stallings. We ‘re going to have a beautiful garden, lots of trees and hope in the future a vegetable garden.
So now we're planning some repairs, mainly replacing floor in a few rooms and paint.
With all this buzz about Eco-paints I 'm a little confused, reading didn’t really help me since the EPA hasn’t set mandatory standards for VOC levels in paint. We’re willing to pay a little more but I’m also reading we may need more coats if we use alternative products, which increases the cost dramatically. I know that if we want to go green we have to go with 5 to 10 grams of VOC per quart. But I’m still worried about the result. So far I found
- Freshaire Choice Paint in Home Depot, affordable, but didn’t really find any colors we like.
- Yolo colorhouse in Home Depot, zero VOC base, but don’t have a lot of colors, so I have to make my mixture, which increases the cost.
- Olympic Premium in Lowes, they offer a variety of colors but I didn’t have the time to check if is really Zero VOC formula.
- Harmony Paint from Sherwin- Williams, just found on line, didn’t have time to check cost yet.
- Behr in Home Depot, claim it is low-VOC
So here’s my question, has any of you used any of these products, are you satisfied with the results. Or what have you used that u really like, especially for kids bedrooms.

First I just wanted to say, congratulations!! You will be very close to us! My parents live in Stallings too, in Chestnut Oaks.

I have painted with the low VOC from Home Depot and a no VOC that Pat got from a paint store. They were both great with almost no smell and nice coverage. Pat's color was REALLY dark and it needed a second coat going on a white wall but we made it work with one because of time constraints. Part of second coats depends on your painting method. I paint so that I need one coat, others just prefer to play it safe and do two.

I'm sure Pat and others will have more info. I just wanted to say hello :)

thanks Anna, I'm so happy I 'm moving closer, and after I'm done with the basics at home I would like to visit you and throw you a few questions on gardening etc.
As of the low-VOC from Home Depot, do you remember if the brand was Behr?
hi there - there is a company based out of asheville called Earth Paint (website - http://www.earthpaint.net/index.php). i have not used them but have been in contact with them about some paint for a nursery. they are definitely able to answer any questions you might have. their number is on the web site. i hope that helps.
thanks Annie, I 'll check it out.
And YES, we have the keys of our new house!!! We 're sooo excited! We have a yard full of flowers. So much to take care.... but love it
Congratulations Sofia on your new house! How exciting! We're in the midst of a green remodel at our home. So, I'm in the middle of researching low VOC and non-toxic paints and stains. Just discovered HunterPaint - www.hunterpaint.com They carry 2 lines of non-toxic, eco-friendly paints. And they even mix custom colors for you. I'm so excited to have such a great resource locally.
Hi Penny,
Tomorrow we'll be done with painting and start moving. Hopefully will be in our new house the following Sunday. I ended up with Harmony from Scherwin Williams. We had great results, although I decided to use some metalics in the living room, which aren't no VOC. But we have one week before we 'll be living there.
Good luck with your remodeling.
I love this great group too
We used paint from Hunter Paints on Monroe Rd. in our office. It was worth the extra cost.

Poison Ivy

Does anyone have suggestions for relieving poison ivy itch?  I'm new to holistic treatments, and hubby has a small case of what he thinks is poison ivy or oak on face and hands.
