Exploring Holistic Alternatives

Families practicing: Alternative & Natural Health; Attachment and Mindful Parent

Some of you may know me from HMN or Crunchy Homeschoolers.

My husband, Jake (also a member) and I have 4 children (girls 8,6,2.5 and boy 4 months). We moved to the Charlotte area from New Hampshire in the spring of '07. We moved to our current home in Mint Hill (Farmwood neighborhood) last November. We home school, yet we aren't usually found at home during the day since we participate in a lot of activities!

Our first child was born in the hospital, but all our other children were born at home in the water. Loved our midwives and our home births!

I had always known I would breastfeed my babies, having been a La Leche league baby myself. But even though I was breastfed and fed homemade baby food, my parents' holistic choices stopped there. So Jake and I just followed our intuition when deciding that co-sleeping felt right and that we wanted to treat our children's medical issues as naturally as possible. From there we started eating healthier, then eating organic and now trying to eat more locally as well. We also have migrated to healthier cleaning products in the home, using mainly Dr. Bronner's or other natural products and also essential oils. We always recycled, that was a no-brainer for us, although we still haven't convinced our parents to do the same.

We have been learning about vaccines throughout our journey and have slowed down schedules and eliminated some vaccines altogether. Our youngest is still not vaxed (or circ'd - another topic) and will stay that way for now.

We are finally cloth diapering our fourth after using disposables with the others. It was really bothering us that although we only had a small bag of trash each week (due to recycling and cooking from scratch), we would still have another trash bag of disposable diapers each week when our older children were babies. We recently bought a new HE washer/dryer so now we had no excuses. :) We've adjusted well to the CDs, even Jake is cool with it even though he was reluctant at first.

I have always searched out others that share my living philosophies because I learn more from every person I meet. I'm very excited about this website, it is growing quickly and will be a wonderful community for holistic parents!

Poison Ivy

Does anyone have suggestions for relieving poison ivy itch?  I'm new to holistic treatments, and hubby has a small case of what he thinks is poison ivy or oak on face and hands.
