Happy Fall Everyone! For those of you who are breastfeeding and need to supplement or cannot breastfeed and don't want to do formula, I have recently come across a farmer who sells "raw" goat milk and is located just south of the Mint Hill area in South Carolina (where its legal). Mahaffey Dairy; Grade A Raw Goat Milk, 803-286-6859
Hey Pat,.....Dianne here; Just a thought,....do you think some of the young moms would like a recipe for baby formula utilizing goat milk and raw carrot juice?

I imagine most moms are nursing. My interest is in perhaps making raw goat's milk kefir, and when folks have dairy allergies/intolerance to be able to recommend a local resource.
I'd be curious about your recipe, we might like it for our family.
Hey Again Pat,
Here is the recipe from Hallelujah Acres. Let me know your thoughts.

If a mother is unable to nurse her baby, which is the ideal and God’s plan, what can a mother substitute for the potentially dangerous soy based formulas we talked about in last week’s Health Tip #487? I asked Olin Idol, N.D., C.N.C., Vice-President of Health here at Hallelujah Acres, that very question and he provided the following:
“The only alternative we can endorse whole heartedly is a combination of:
1/3 raw Goat’s milk
1/3 strained raw vegetable juice (½ carrot and ½ celery or dark green leafy lettuce juice (which is vital for the folic acid missing in Goat’s milk)
1/3 distilled water
By the age of 6-months, the distilled water may be eliminated and the formula changed to 1/2 raw goat’s milk and 1/2 veggie juice.
Note: Unfortunately, raw goat’s milk cannot be sold in many states. Best option would be to find someone with a dairy goat (check with feed dealers or agricultural extension offices for folks with dairy goats in your area). Once located, you can sometimes buy 1/2 interest in a milk goat and use the milk from that goat legally. When the milk is no longer needed, you can donate your share back to the original owner to compensate him/her for their time, etc.”
Oh! That's not far,.....part of my "turf" for 15 years! Amanda, my buddy who sent me to this site, lives out that way. The three of us should rendezvous at that "Robeks" juice place next to Wolfgang Puck's, (assuming that its still there). TTFN-

You do need to be careful with babies under a year as to what you substitute for human milk. I need to caution moms about replacing human milk or formula with just raw goat milk or any other animal milk. Human milk is different than milk of other mammals. I agree there are issues with formula and if it was me personally who had to do something other than give my baby my milk, I would research alternatives and discuss it with my naturopathic doctor. :)
Thank you for bringing up the milk banks- how can I forget.
and I just need to add- if you are having difficulty nursing or know someone who is- contact a La Leche League Leader (LLL) or visit: http://www.llli.org/
Leaders are all moms who have nursed there baby for at least a year and have received training and have access to the most current information on breastfeeding. The purpose of LLL is to support moms with nursing- no matter what there nursing goal is and to provide information. Part of the training is in communication skills in order to be a good listener for any mom experiencing difficulties. Besides they are volunteers so there assistance including phone help is free!
Most of the time, with some determination, any difficulties with nursing can be overcome with support and accurate information. Unfortunately, there are medical professionals who give moms inaccurate information.
Pregnant women are welcome at meetings too- the best time to educate themselves to prevent problems with breastfeeding. Meetings are free and occur monthly all over the Charlotte Area (and all over the US and other countries.) The website has a list by state of local meetings as well as leader contact information.
I imagine most of you on this site have heard of LLL but you never know when someone has not. I also know there is misinformation about LLL in the general population.
