Families practicing: Alternative & Natural Health; Attachment and Mindful Parent

I also posted this in Member Resources. I didn't quite know where I would get a better response.

I have read the previous discussion about someone looking for a pediatrician. But I wanted to start a new discussion on this topic. I have a 2 month old who has seen a regular pediatrician at his 1 week visit and then at the 1 month visit. I had scheduled the 2 month visit and then canceled it because I knew he would be wanting to give my child the vaccinations. We had previously talked about vaccines with him. He is pro vaccines.

So, I am looking for a non vax friendly pediatrician or family practice or any other doctor/naturalist. The only thing is that no one mentioned about how much it will cost you out of pocket to go to a naturopath doctor or similar doctor. I looked at some of the other doctor's websites that were in the previous discussion. I would really like to go to a holistic type doctor but not sure of the costs. Most of the holistic type doctors do not accept insurance or actually the insurance doesn't accept those doctors. Anyway, I would like to know a couple of things. First, do any of you go to well checkups if you don't get vaccinations for your child? Also, would any of you be willing to tell me about how much you pay out of pocket to go to a naturopath or holistic doctor?

Also, we currently have medicaid for our child. And, I would be traveling a really good distance to go to any of the doctors that y'all mentioned in the previous post. We live in Gaston County. Does anyone know any doctors/pediatricians/family practices/naturopaths/holistic doctors anywhere close to here or even a little farther away. I'm willing to drive but I would like to know of all my options that I may have available first.

I have a list of more non-vax friendly peds if you want me to e-mail it to you. Just don't tell them they are on a list. In Ballantyne there is a WONDERFUL Ped who practices alternative med. He does not take medicaid (my kids are on medicaid as well). I have an amazing naturopath that is all of my family's primary doctor. Her fees vary depending on what is being done. I think an office visit is $35, but I'm not 100% sure. I did take my daugher to well visits without vax, but I haven't taken her since her 1yr visit and I have only taken my son once to get established. My e-mail is beautiful-birth@hotmail.com if you want the list.
I have only been in NC for a little over a year and the Pediatrician we see is not holistic/natural but has not given any argument when I took my 4 & 5 yr olds in for their check up and declined to get shots. She didn't ask questions or lecture me or anything. She did say ok well then she wanted to a urine and blood test to "make sure" everything is ok. And that was that. She also "includes" me in the treatment when my kids are sick and I take them there, giving what she would prescribe and if that is the course I would like to take. I like her. We have seen also seen a homeopathic dr and I do call him sometimes instead of our Pediatrican, Dr. Lemaster. Good Luck!

I heard from another group that there is a ped office at the Belmont Carmont(sp?) medical offices that accepts non vac kids. I guess all you have to do is just sign a paper that you are declining the vac and that's it. I would call the offices there and see. I didn't get a name though but I know it is a female Dr. I think it may have been posted here also.
My entire family sees Dr. Kanelos (and his PA, Chris Jenny) in Ballantyne. We don't vax, and I've never had a problem there.

I used to live in a small town in Arizona and I had to go through the Spanish Inquisition when I took my kids to the ped there. Eventually our ped fired us.

As far as "well baby" visits, if you choose not to vax there is no reason for well baby checkups, as far as I know. I brought my kids in to meet Dr. K and Chris when we first moved here, but my daughters haven't been seen since then.

Good luck!
We see Dr. Kanelos in Ballantyne and although he is pro vax, he has never given me a problem so far about not vaxing. I would not consider him to be holistic by any means but we mostly go for yearly check ups. We recently started seeing Dr. Jessica Stadmauer a ND in Dilworth and LOVE her!! The cost for an initial visit was around $150 (i think) but well worth the price. Money is VERY tight in our household but I was tired of going to regular MD's and paying the $20 copay only for them to offer drugs to mask my child's chronic healthcare problems. For me the investment was worth it.

Poison Ivy

Does anyone have suggestions for relieving poison ivy itch?  I'm new to holistic treatments, and hubby has a small case of what he thinks is poison ivy or oak on face and hands.
