10 members- this is cool!
I have enjoyed reading everyone's comments. an extreme sport- great image- yes, nursing a toddler alone can be an extreme sport as they twirl around and contort themselves in various positions.

I am excited to be a part of the group! This kind of support is hard to find and is so important for moms like me, who intend to break the social normof weaning before her baby's first birthday. I nursed Carson until a little past the age of 1 and was encouraged to wean him, and not knowing better,I did. He is 4 and I am now nursing my 8mo son Caiden, who I intend to nurse as long as he wants mommies' "nuk".
I had a question about starting solids. My 8mo is not interested in solids and refuses to eat any from a spoon or otherwise. Did anyone else in the group have a nursling who wanted breastmilk only, after 6months of age?

Melanie,

My 15 month still isn't real interested in foods. I think breast milk is an important source of nutrition until the age of 2, at least. Its a super food. :) She has never had an issue with growth. We also started solids at around 6-7 months and made our own, she was interested at first, then lost interest once it wasn't 'new' anymore. What we started doing was just offering her a fruit or veggie with our meals, if she was interested great, if not not biggie. We didn't start offering her meals until she was showing real interest at around a year. Let him be your guide. :)

Melanie,

My almost 4 year old still doesn't eat much... still prefers 'nummies' :) Seriously, though, he didn't start eating any solid foods until he was almost 2. He simply had no interest. The only concern my pediatrican had was after he turned one, he wanted to make sure there wasn't an iron deficiency, which they can easily test for.

Thanks for the support about solids...everyone makes it an issue. Although these parents are usually formula feeders, they talk to me about solids as though I am seriosly depriving my baby! Little do they know, I am a supermom with superpowers- I make SUPERFOOD!

I started feeding DD1 non-breastmilk food (I say that because BM IS food!) when she was 11 months old. One of my twins was very interested in it at 10mo, but the other was not until 11mo. I tried to wait until they were all interested in eating and could feed themselves. My philosophy was that humans probably didn't really give their babies other foods until they were reaching/asking for them, and that they weren't really eating that much until they could do it themselves. For all three girls, BM was their main source of nutrition until they were about 18 mo old. My twins are 23 mo now and BM makes up a large percentage all the time, some days it is just about all they eat.

Yay for superfood!

Hi all. I am still nursing DS 1 who is 27 months now and I'm 7.5 mos pregnant with DS 2. Soon I'll be tandeming!
Comment by Gina Grothoff on November 21, 2008 at 12:33pm
It is not easy to continue breastfeeding while pregnant, it can be uncomfortable- but yea to you for doing it! I think tandem nursing esp with a toddler can help the older child not feel left out.
I am due with number 3 Jan 4. when's your due date?

Did any of you use extended breastfeeding to help with natural childspacing?
Comment by Sarah W on November 22, 2008 at 11:17am
To Gina - yeah, to continue to BF while pregnant has not been a walk in the park! It's pretty uncomfortable, although bearable, most of the time. I am wondering if it just magically changes after the baby is born?? I am due Jan 2!

Melanie - we have used "ecological" breastfeeding to help with natural child spacing. (We only use NFP/FAM.) There is a book on this subject called "Breastfeeding and Natural Childspacing" if you're interested. It makes a difference *how* you BF, not just *how long.* I did not get my cycle back for 11.5 mos. The average return to fertility for moms who EcoBF is 14.5 mos.

Poison Ivy

Does anyone have suggestions for relieving poison ivy itch?  I'm new to holistic treatments, and hubby has a small case of what he thinks is poison ivy or oak on face and hands.
